What's going on in your womb now? A lot. Your baby-in-the-making isjust a tiny ball consisting of several hundred cells that aremultiplying madly. Once the ball of cells (called a blastocyst) takesup residence in your uterus, the part of it that will develop into theplacenta starts producing the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionicgonadotropin), which tells your ovaries to stop releasing eggs andtriggers increased production of estrogen and progesterone (which keepyour uterus from shedding its lining — and its tiny passenger — andstimulates placental growth). HCG is the hormone that turns a pregnancy testpositive; by the end of this week, you may be able to take one and geta positive result! (If your test is negative and you still haven'tgotten your period in two or three days, try again then.)

Meanwhile, amniotic fluid is beginning to collect around your ball ofcells in the cavity that will become the amniotic sac. This fluid willcushion your baby in the weeks and months ahead. Right now, your littleblastocyst is receiving oxygen and nutrients (and discarding wasteproducts) through a primitive circulation system made up of microscopictunnels that connect your developing baby to the blood vessels in youruterine wall. The placenta won't be developed enough to take over thistask until the end of next week.

This week marks the beginning of theembryonic period. From now until 10 weeks, all of your baby's organswill begin to develop and some will even begin to function. As aresult, this is the time when she'll be most vulnerable to anythingthat might interfere with her development.

Right now your baby is an embryo the size of a poppy seed, consisting of two layers: the epiblast and the hypoblast, from which all of her organs and body parts will develop.

Theprimitive placenta is also made up of two layers at this point. Itscells are tunneling into the lining of your uterus, creating spaces foryour blood to flow so that the developed placenta will be able toprovide nutrients and oxygen to your growing baby when it starts tofunction at the end of this week.

Also present now are theamniotic sac, which will house your baby; the amniotic fluid, whichwill cushion her as she grows; and the yolk sac, which produces yourbaby's red blood cells and helps deliver nutrients to her until theplacenta has developed and is ready to take over this duty.

Your pregnancy: 5 weeks

Deep in your uterus your embryo is growing at a furious pace. At this point, he's about the size of a sesame seed,and he looks more like a tiny tadpole than a human. He's now made up ofthree layers — the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm — whichwill later form all of his organs and tissues.
The neural tube — from which your baby's brain, spinal cord, nerves,and backbone will sprout — is starting to develop in the top layer,called the ectoderm. This layer will also give rise to his skin, hair,nails, mammary and sweat glands, and tooth enamel.

His heart andcirculatory system begin to form in the middle layer, or mesoderm.(This week, in fact, his tiny heart begins to divide into chambers andbeat and pump blood.) The mesoderm will also form your baby's muscles,cartilage, bone, and subcutaneous (under skin) tissue.

The thirdlayer, or endoderm, will house his lungs, intestines, and rudimentaryurinary system, as well as his thyroid, liver, and pancreas. In themeantime, the primitive placenta and umbilical cord, which delivernourishment and oxygen to your baby, are already on the job.

Inother developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands areflexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be longenough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine isclearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves arebeginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's foreheadtemporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on hishead, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump,he's about 1 1/4 inches long.
